Happy New Year! We're now into the second month of Summer in Wyndham City, Melbourne, Victoria. So far, over the last two and a half weeks, it's been a typically dry start to Summer after a not-so-bad start in the beginning of December.
Over the last two days alone, Melbourne experienced its hottest weekend in a decade, putting a bit of pressure on the veggies over the last few days with intense heat and strong sun at times. My garden experienced the usual wilting effects from the heat, regardless of soil moisture. The leaves of the plants were burning, but only a good spray of water remedied the potential damage and minimized burning.
Days are looking dry over the next week, so the potential for a continued dry Summer is looking very likely from here, but is still uncertain at this point due to the crazy, ever-changing weather patterns.
The lettuce we grew in the garden, unfortunately, didn't turn out too well. We missed the correct time to harvest, and they ended up rotting. But everything else is looking good. We harvested the broad beans and a few cucumbers, and the cherry tomatoes and Roma tomatoes are now coming through. Potatoes are doing well, and the big carrots are very close to pulling.
Overall, the garden is doing well, considering the dry, hot weather, but we're going through heaps of water. That's just the way it is this time of year. Hoping for some rain tonight or tomorrow morning – every little bit helps!
