We're a little behind this year in the old veggie garden.
I've been a bit occupied with other people's yards for the last six weeks or so. Usually, I'm not in a rush in Spring because of the frost, but we haven't had much this year. Anyway, I started planting a couple of weeks ago and have plenty more to add. We have ample time to get things growing.
I only managed to plant some lettuce and cherry tomatoes in my rear garden behind the shed also had a few issues with the tiger snails they thought it would be cool to take out a few of my baby lettuce unfortunately for them the snail bate did the trick, I had no choice otherwise they would of taken everything out in a few days. There's already some established silver-beet from years ago. I love the stuff; it grows like wildfire in Wyndham. I also planted carrot and broad bean seeds, as the old beans seem to grow well in my garden from previous seasons.
Because my rear garden doesn't get full sun, I made sure to plant where the sun shines the most. The plants aren't in straight rows. This garden isn't perfect, but that's exactly how I want it. Nature isn't perfect, so my garden is mostly about convenience and natural occurrence, just like nature. In this part of the garden, following the sun is essential due to the sun factors.
Next, I addressed the soil. It was pretty depleted as I hadn't added anything to it for years. I added some mulch and cow manure before planting. Now, I'm just keeping everything well watered during the hotter periods of the day. The rain last week was great for getting things going. The good old spring rain kicked things into motion. Now, I just need to supplement with a natural fertilizer every so often. I still need to do this, but I'll get around to it in the next few days.
The journey starts here with my veggie garden, as it will with yours. My second garden is a bit different. It's set on both sides of concrete and gets full sun pretty much. One side is up against the house, and rain doesn't really reach it, so I have to keep the area well watered. I've planted cucumber seeds. They grow really well this time of year. The soil is pretty poor, so I'll need to add some manure and mulch on top to give it a boost. I've set up a hanging system for the cucumbers, as it's better for the fruit, saves space, and hopefully looks cool too.
Across the road, over the path, we go to the garden against the fence. This one also needs some extra attention. I have a couple of field tomato plants from last year. As you know, tomato plants can self-seed, so they keep coming back. I have them sprouting like grass, but I'll just hand-pull them. Next to the tomato plants, I've planted some rock melon. My idea is to grow them like a vine next to the tomato plants. I'll probably need to strengthen my half-pipe vine support, but it's all work in progress this season.
I still have room in the garden to plant some more veggies. I want to alternate each harvest, so I'll most likely plant some more lettuce, but haven't decided on anything else yet. Overall, it's great to see things growing. The temperatures are getting better for gardening, and were getting the garden ready for the growing season. Bring it on!
